Kanyashree Prakalpa is a flagship initiative by the Government of West Bengal aimed at empowering adolescent girls through financial support and education. Launched in 2013, the scheme encourages girls to remain in school and delay marriage until the legal age of 18, thereby improving their health, education, and social status.

Key Components

  1. Annual Scholarship (K1): Girls aged 13–18, enrolled in Classes VIII–XII in government-recognized schools or vocational courses, receive ₹1,000 per year.

  2. One-Time Grant (K2): Girls who turn 18 and are unmarried, pursuing higher education, vocational training, or sports, are eligible for a ₹25,000 grant.

  3. Postgraduate Scholarship (K3): Aimed at girls continuing their education after undergraduate studies, this component supports postgraduate studies in recognized institutions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: 13–18 years for K1; 18–19 years for K2.

  • Marital Status:

  • Income: Family income up to ₹1.2 lakh per annum; income ceiling is waived for orphans, girls with disabilities (40% or more), or those in juvenile homes.

  • Education: Enrolled in a recognized educational institution.

Application Process

Applications can be submitted online through the official Kanyashree portal: wbkanyashree.gov.in. Applicants must have a bank account in their name and provide necessary documents such as age proof, income certificate, and educational enrollment details.

Since its inception, Kanyashree Prakalpa has benefited over 50 lakh girls, significantly reducing school dropout rates and promoting gender equality in education.
